Jose Mourinho first Tottenham press conference – LIVE

  • Jose Mourinho faces media for first time
  • Appointed Spurs manager on Wednesday morning
  • Tottenham currently sit 14th in Premier League
  • First game in charge against West Ham on Saturday 12.30pm

JM on club ties: “I think I am [not only Mr Chelsea but] Mr Porto and Mr Real Madrid and other clubs as well, I am whatever club I am at. I wear the pyjamas of the club and sleep in them. I am a club man, but I am a many club man.”

JM on his ‘mojo’: “I have to google translate to work out mojo is. I can figure out what you mean. When I don’t win I’m not happy. I cannot change that.

“If you are happy by losing football matches, it’s difficult to be a winner in any moment of your career. But the emotional control to keep the self-esteem and confidence and in those around you is very important.”

JM on past mistakes: “These last 11 months have been used to think and to prepare. You never lose your DNA. You are what you are – for the good things and the bad things. I know in my career that I’ve made mistakes.

“I’m not going to make the same mistakes. I’m going to make new mistakes. I’m not going to say I’m more fit. I was always fit.

“I am humble. I am humble enough to try to analyse my career. Not just the last year but the problems and the solutions. The principle of my analysis was not to blame anyone else.

“I’m nobody to advise people but to have a break was very positive for me. Having the first summer where I didn’t work was not good for me. I was a bit lost. But it was good for me. I even learned how to be a pundit.”

JM on being prepared: “I had a feeling I was going to get a club mid-season. I knew I would be in a situation where I would get only one or two days before my first game. I cannot come here and think it is about myself. It is about the players and going from a base of stability.”

JM on Sky and landing a job: “[To Sky reporter] I know you would like to keep me at Sky! But this is my life.

“Happiness-wise I am convinced my choice was a great one. (On a scale of one to ten) ten. The job? Sometimes results make these decisions. I wouldn’t say it’s a (big) job (to turn things around). The club is huge. I know that I have potentially a great job in my hands.”

JM on Pochettino: “I’ve been smiling for two days. First of all I do it with a bit of sadness, I have to speak about Mauricio. I have to congratulate him on the incredible job he did. I share with you what we shared inside. This club will always be his home, this training ground his training ground. He is always welcome here.

“Tomorrow is another day. He will find happiness soon. He will give everything like he did at this club. He will leave with sadness with the feeling that he did great work. It is what everyone at the club felt.”

Jose Mourinho is in the building to face the press with a cockerel on his chest for the first time.

Unai Emery airs his thoughts

Many people believed Arsenal boss Unai Emery would be sacked before Pochettino, and the Spaniard has given his take on the matter.

“It is not our next match. It’s a surprise how the relationship with Pochetinno ended but I don’t know exactly why,” he said.

“He’s (Mourinho) a very good coach, His career is very strong with titles and experience. I also think Pochetinno’s work at Tottenham was amazing.

Brendan Rodgers thoughts

Premier League managers up and down the country are conducting their press conferences today and Brendan Rodgers has offered his take on the appointment of Mourinho.

It has been reported that Rodgers was the first-choice candidate to replace Pochettino – here’s what the Leicester boss had to say.

“You have to say well done to Tottenham and Mauricio for their time together. He’s created a culture for players to develop. The relationship was strong between him and Daniel levy. Everyone can look back and reflect on the job they did there. He’ll go away and rest now and come back to a great job.

“Bringing in Jose, they’ve brought in someone in who’s won throughout his career as a manager. He inherits a strong group of players and will want to do what he’s always done and win.

“Jose is a winner and has been that throughout his career. He brings intensity and he was a big influence for me back then as a coach. His level of detail, his focus, his quality with people – he was brilliant for me.

“He was very open with his ideas, he was absolutely brilliant – he was a leader of the squad and the team. For me back then I was in pole position to see how he operated. He’s different to some coaches but he will go in there with his soul focus to win.”

Jose’s cavalry

It was not only Pochettino who was dismissed and not only Mourinho who was appointed.

Both men come with a cavalry of coaching staff and Mourinho welcomes a vastly experienced team with him to Enfield.

Mourinho’s five-man coaching team consists of Joao Sacramento (assistant coach), Carlos Lalin (fitness coach), Nuno Santos (goalkeeper coach), Ricardo Formosinho (tactical analyst) and Giovanni Cerra (technical analyst).

Joao and Nuno both left their posts at Lille in Ligue 1 in order to join the exciting project.

Early transfer demands

Mourinho did not beat around the bush upon landing the job in north London.

Express Sport understands The Special One told Daniel Levy he need Harry Kane to stay amid reports the striker was eyeing a move away next summer.

That deal-breaker in negotiations appears to have been placated and Mourinho reportedly sent a warm message to Kane after being appointed.

He told the England captain he regarded him as the best striker in Europe and that they would win trophies together.

What has Daniel Levy said?

The Spurs chairman gave a glowing review of Mourinho after announcing him as new head coach.

“In Jose we have one of the most successful managers in football,” he said.

“He has a wealth of experience, can inspire teams and is a great tactician.

“He has won honours at every club he has coached. We believe he will bring energy and belief to the dressing room.”

Jose’s first impressions

The only glimpse we’ve had of Mourinho talking all things Spurs so far was in an edited video clip published by the in-house media. Here’s what he had to say on a range of topics.

Promise: “I couldn’t be happier and if I was not as happy as I am, I wouldn’t be here. What can I promise? Passion – for my job but also passion for my club.

“It’s a privilege when a manager goes to a club and feels that happiness in relation to the squad that he’s going to have.”

Previous thoughts: “To play against Tottenham at White Hart Lane was always hard but beautiful. It was one of these places where I used to go with passion but also with respect.

“I always told about the Club’s potential. I always told about the qualities of the players. I always told the magnificent work the Club was doing.”

GOOD AFTERNOON…

Or boa tarde, should I say, to live coverage of Jose Mourinho’s first press conference as Tottenham manager.

How did it come to this? When is it going to feel right? There are so many questions, and hopefully Mourinho will answer them in the coming moments.

In the matter of 12 hours, Mourinho had gone from occasional Sky Sports pundit to Tottenham manager, with Mauricio Pochettino making way.

Yesterday afternoon he took training at Enfield and now this afternoon he will sit down, with a Spurs badge on his chest, and talk about his new side. It’s all becoming very real. Strap in for the ride.
