Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho is keen on signing West Ham United defender Issa Diop.

The Portuguese coach will be handed limited funds in January but he’s already planning for next summer, when a number of Spurs players such as Christian Eriksen, Danny Rose and Jan Vertonghen could leave.

Diop, 22, joined the Hammers in a £22m deal from Toulouse in 2018 and he was a huge success during his debut campaign at the London Stadium.

The Frenchman caught Mourinho’s eye during West Ham’s 3-1 win against his Manchester United side last September and he praised Diop – and the Hammers’ scouting department – after the game.

‘He had a fantastic match,’ said Mourinho.

‘Congratulations to the scout that found a 21-year-old kid Diop – a monster who dominated in the duels’.

Mourinho was sacked at Old Trafford last December after the club failed to back him in the transfer market and it’s believed United were put off by West Ham’s £60m valuation for Diop.

SkySports claim Mourinho remains a huge admirer of Diop and wants Spurs to sign him this summer as a long-term replacement for Alderweireld.

However, West Ham’s valuation of the defender remains around £60m, meaning Tottenham would have to make Diop their second biggest signing of all time to take him to north London.
