Jose Mourinho brands Southampton coach an "idiot" after clash during Tottenham defeat

Jose Mourinho admitted he deserved his yellow card against Southampton – before branding a member of the opposition bench an “idiot”.

Mourinho was shown a yellow card by referee Mike Dean after approaching the Southampton bench during the second half of the clash.

The Spurs boss appeared to try and look at their tactics on a piece of paper, sparking a reaction from the Southampton bench.

The incident happened shortly after Harry Kane’s equaliser had been disallowed for offside.

Speaking after the match, Mourinho said: “I think the yellow card is fair because I was rude, but I was rude to an idiot.”

Mourinho also lost talisman Kane to injury, with the striker suffering a thigh problem in scoring the goal.

He was replaced by Erik Lamela and Mourinho admits he faces a spell on the sidelines, with Tanguy Ndombele also picking up a blow in the first half.

“Harry Kane plays every minute, he plays all the time. It might be big, it might be small. For sure he will be out,” he added.

“Tanguy Ndombele, I don’t know. I imagine this is the tenth injury of the season. They stop him to play. It doesn’t give him continuity. We had three days between matches.”

On the defeat, he added: “It was quite a strange game. We had no problems defensively. They didn’t create great problems.

“We see the bad result today which is the continuity of the last year. For 12 months, it has been very difficult to get results away from home.

“The work is not about buying, it is about working with the players on the pitch.”
