Jose Mourinho backed to build Tottenham team around one star if he performs u-turn

Jose Mourinho could change Christian Eriksen’s mind on his future, by convincing him that Tottenham are going to win trophies.

The Dane is out of contract next summer and will be free to speak with other clubs in January.

Eriksen made it clear after the Champions League final defeat to Liverpool, that he wanted to embark on a new challenge, teasing a move to Real Madrid.

But a deal failed to come to fruition, keeping him at Tottenham until at least the new year to his frustration.

Now former Spurs and England goalkeeper Paul Robinson, believes Jose Mourinho could build his team around Eriksen if the pair hold positive talks about the midfielder staying at the club.

“Whether Christian Eriksen turns around and says: ‘I’d like to work with Jose’, or whether he doesn’t, it all depends on what his ambitions are,” Robinson told Football Insider.

“A fit, focused, fully committed Christian Eriksen is a huge asset.

“If Jose can get that, get him to sign a new contract and build a team around him, he can be an asset, or get money for him and allow Jose to spend it.

“Without a shadow of a doubt, he’s a steely little individual, he wins trophies. He’s been solid all the time with hard style football.

“Whether he can build a relationship with Christian Eriksen where he buys into that and he can see the potential of winning trophies at Tottenham.”

Daniel Levy will also have a part to play in the matter and could have the final say on whether Eriksen stays or goes.

But in the summer his stance was clear, Eriksen was not for sale at any price and Tottenham want to keep all of their best players.

Robinson also claimed that the Spurs chairman could decide to give Mourinho some funds to try and tie Eriksen down to a new contract.

The 27-year-old is likely to demand an increase in wages given that he could be available on a free transfer and would therefore not cost another club a penny in transfer fees.

He added: “Daniel’s maybe giving him funds in January so Mourinho’s able to turn round to Eriksen and go: ‘Look, I’ve got X amount of pounds, this is what we’re doing, give me two seasons.’

“That could be something that a conversation’s gone on, or they might be so far down the line that he’s irretrievable. Time will tell.”
