Jose Mourinho admits surprise at Man Utd performance vs Liverpool but says result was fair

Jose Mourinho admitted Manchester United were better than he thought they would be against Liverpool.

United stopped Liverpool’s winning run in the Premier League at 17 matches with the 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.

The hosts may have felt they deserved all three points as it was not until the 85th minute before Adam Lallana equalised for the Reds.

Mourinho, who was working as a pundit for Sky Sports on the game, asked his former side for “heart” before the match started.

However, the Portuguese says United gave more than that and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be disappointed not to come away with all three points.

But ultimately he claims the last 20 minutes from Liverpool meant they deserved to snatch a draw.

“It’s hard to say [if Liverpool deserved a point],” Mourinho said.

“I think they did something to have it.

“Jurgen [Klopp] in the last 20 minutes tried to give United different problems to resolve, more people through the middle, more occupation spaces in the boxes, more projection from the full-backs, so he gave them problems and got an award from it.

“But at the same time I feel Ole and United after such a fantastic effort I feel they may be a bit disappointed with one mistake and two points that they lost.

“At the beginning of the game I asked United for heart and they had it but they had more than that.

“They were well organised, they had a game plan, they stuck to it.

“At half time, the problem was can they keep that defensive intensity for 90 minutes? And they couldn’t.

“Then I think the end of the game Liverpool were on top so the result is probably fair.

“If I was Ole, I’d be a little bit frustrated because the boys gave everything.”
