Jordan Henderson explains why Liverpool players always look at the Kop before big games

Jordan Henderson has opened up on how the Kop inspires Liverpool’s stars ahead of their crucial Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night.

The Reds have been handed a huge boost ahead of their last-16 second-leg tie with the Spanish giants at Anfield as Henderson is fit for the clash.

The England midfielder has been out since injuring a hamstring in the first leg of the last 16 contest three weeks ago but trained on Sunday and Monday and is available to take his place in the squad as the Reds seek to overcome a 1-0 deficit.

And, speaking ahead of the clash, Henderson has issued a rallying cry to the Liverpool faithful – by urging them to display their trademark vocal support.

Henderson told Liverpool’s matchday programme : “Being a supporter on Saturday, I made a point of properly soaking in the feeling around Anfield in those final few minutes and seconds and in particular what was happening on the Kop. It made me realise why it’s so important.

“It was genuinely incredible to look at with all the colours and flags and the noise was unreal. It looked and sounded amazing.

“I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but if you watch our players just before we assemble for kick-off, most have a proper look at the Kop and try to take a moment to take it all in.”

While Henderson has no doubt that Liverpool can produce another Champions League comeback, the Reds skipper is also aware of the threat posed by Atletico.

He added: “I know going into tonight’s game there’ll be a lot of talk about the importance of us being at home… but we can never and will never take it for granted.”

As well as Henderson’s return, left-back Andy Robertson is expected to play after sitting out Saturday’s win over Bournemouth as a precaution but goalkeeper Alisson Becker (hip) will miss the match.
