This morning it was revealed that Sony Pictures and The Walt Disney Studios had officially made a deal to keep Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and bring a third entry in the series to the big screen. Now, Deadline reports that Homecoming and Far From Home director Jon Watts is in talks to return for the third feature.

It was previously unclear if Watts would return to the franchise, as his contract was completed with this summer’s Far From Home. It was revealed previously that he had been in discussions with other studios for other potential projects, but it looks like Watts will join Sam Raimi as the only directors to helm three Spider-Man movies (Marc Webb will have to wait outside).

Tom Holland will return for the film as the titular wall crawler, and it remains to be seen what villains he’ll go up against in the trilogy caper. Given the ending of Far From Home however, any number of his rogues gallery are likely eager for a fight. Holland’s Spider-Man is also set to appear in another Marvel Studios film per the new agreement.

The third Spider-Man film from Marvel Studios is set for a July 16, 2021 release, officially adding another addition to the already crowded Phase 4 release slate. The release date puts the film in direct competition with Paramount’s Mission: Impossible 7, which opens on July 23, 2021. Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings opens on February 12, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness opens on May 7 and Thor: Love & Thunder opens on November 5, 2021, making 2021 the fist year we get FOUR MCU movies!

Sony’s upcoming Spidey slate includes the Venom sequel, starring Tom Hardy and directed by Andy Serkis, as well as Jared Leto’s in-the-can Morbius, a Kraven the Hunter film, and a spinoff featuring Silver Sable and Black Cat. Should these films interact with the MCU and Tom Holland, it remains to be seen, but the door seems open.
