Johnny Marr has responded to The Smiths reunion rumours by taking a swipe at his former friend Morrissey’s political views.
The musician, 56, was quizzed by a fan about a mysterious tour taking place next year after rumours spread that Live Nation had “won the rights for a long-awaited reunion”.
Responding to the rumours, which were posted on a Morrissey fan website, Marr wrote on Twitter: “Nigel Farage on guitar.”
Morrissey has previously backed Mr Farage, who is currently leader of the Brexit Party. Meanwhile, the 60-year-old singer has also come under fire for his endorsements of English Defence League founder Tommy Robinson, and the “For Britain” party.
Some of his past comments have also led to his music being banned from some music shops.
Marr, meanwhile, has previously criticised conservative politicians such as former prime minister Theresa May.
In an interview with NME magazine, Marr also stated that he was not concerned about Morrissey’s views affecting the legacy of The Smiths.
He said: “I don’t think you can change history. I’ve said that before. I’m not worried. It’s got nothing to do with my world or my life. The songs are out there for people to judge, relate to and hear.
“I think that’s all going to be forgotten in a few weeks, as these things inevitably are – for better or worse.”
The Smiths broke up in 1987 and fans have been calling for the band to reunite for years.
