John Wick video game from the creator of Thomas Was Alone gets first trailer

John Wick Hex – not the sort of tie-in you’d expect

He’s had a cameo in Fortnite but now John Wick has his own game, but not from the sort of developer you’d normally expect…

Today's where you finally find out...E3 2019 Nintendo Direct dated but will not feature any new hardware

In yet more evidence that movie tie-ins are slowly creeping back into fashion for video games, there’s set to be a new John Wick game by British indie developer Mike Bithell.

You should immediately put aside any thoughts of a big budget release though as the game is looking very avant-garde, as you’d expect from the creator of Thomas Was Alone, Volume, and Subsurface Circular.

But despite the cel-shaded visuals the game is promising a realistic combat simulation, with an emphasis on tactics and the dangers of limited ammo.

Publisher Good Shepherd describes the game, and movies, as ‘fight-choreographed chess’ and rather than being a direct adaptation of the new film is called John Wick Hex.

To ensure authenticity, Bithell has been working with the stunt team from the movie and there’s also a couple of voice actors from the film too – namely Ian McShane (Winston) and Lance Reddick (Charon, the concierge). Although Kaenau himself doesn’t seem to be involved.

Looking at the screenshots the game looks almost XCOM-influenced, with the visuals seeming to owe a debt to cult classic killer7 – which are not only great games but not the sort of things you’d usually expect a film tie-in to use as inspiration.

John Wick Hex will be released on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC (as an Epic Games Store exclusive). There’s no release date yet but it will be at E3 next month.
