John Terry left Mateo Kovacic wincing in pain after he crushed the midfielder’s hand following Chelsea’s win over Aston Villa on Wednesday evening.

Tammy Abraham had opened the scoring for Chelsea before Trezeguet netted an equaliser for Villa, but Mason Mount sealed Chelsea’s 2-1 victory with a goal in the 48th minute.

Terry, meanwhile, received a warm welcome back from Chelsea fans at Stamford Bridge having spent 22 years there as a player.

But Villa’s assistant coach left his mark on Kovacic as he grabbed the Croatian midfielder too tightly during a handshake.

Kovacic winced as he walked down the tunnel, while Terry turned around and quickly held out his hand as an apology to the Chelsea midfielder.

Lampard was also asked about Terry’s return after Chelsea’s latest win, which keeps them fourth in the Premier League after Liverpool, Leicester City and Manchester City all won this week.

‘He had his moment on the pitch,’ said Lampard.

‘It is difficult when you come back, I did it last year, to a club that you feel so much for and visa-versa as they did with John.

‘You are working and part of another team, another club and he is respectful of Aston Villa, I know that.

‘It wasn’t a massive celebration time but the respect both ways is huge.’
