John Lennon death: The Beatles' Ringo Starr – ‘I still well up that some b****** shot him’

Back in 1980, The Beatles legend John Lennon was suddenly taken from us when fatally shot at the age of just 40. Now in a new interview with Rolling Stone, Sir Ringo Starr has spoken on finding out about the tragic event. The 79-year-old said: “When John went, I was in the Bahamas. I was getting a phone call from my stepkids in L.A. saying, ‘Something’s happened to John.’

Starr lamented: “And then they called and said, ‘John’s dead.’

“And I didn’t know what to do.

“And I still well up that some b****** shot him.

“But I just said, ‘We’ve got to get a plane.’

“We got a plane to New York, and you don’t know what you can do.

“We went to the apartment. ‘Anything we can do?’”

Starr added: “And Yoko just said, ‘Well, you just play with Sean. Keep Sean busy.’

“And that’s what we did. That’s what you think: ‘What do you do now?’

Earlier this year, Sir Paul McCartney’s official biographer exclusively told Express.co.uk of how John Lennon would defuse arguments between the songwriting duo.

Barry Miles, McCartney’s friend since 1965, said: “The songwriting relationship and friendship was so deep that it transcended any bickering over money or management.

“Paul said that on a number of occasions they’d be in the middle of an argument and John would just pull his little granny glasses down the end of his nose, look over the top and say, ‘It’s only me’ and then go back to shouting and blinding and swearing.”

Miles added: “You can’t go through something like Beatlemania without being totally close to the other members.

“For all those years they were in that strange bubble, just travelling around the world.”

Miles also claims John’s wit was actually mistaken for rudeness used as a defence mechanism.

He said: “John was always a prickly, difficult character and a lot of the so-called rapier wit was really just old-style rudeness really – because he’d had a really quite dysfunctional upbringing. Liverpool was a tough city to grow up in back then, maybe still is.

“So he had a lot of defences and what’s seemed like an argumentative, distant relationship toward the end was still there.”
