John Cleese: Monty Python star issues apology as comedian makes announcement in lockdown

John Cleese, 80, took to Twitter and shared a video message where he revealed he was joining Instagram. The Monty Python issued an apology during his cheeky speech after he struggled to remember the name of the picture-sharing site.

In view of his 5.7 million Twitter followers, the comic could be seen casually dressed as he delivered the exciting news.

He told fans they would be getting the “most intimate and private photographs” once he joined Instagram.

Speaking in the clip, John said through clenched teeth: “Have we started?” unaware of whether the cameras had begun rolling.

He went on: “Hello. I’m John Cleese and in this period of self-isolation – apart from my daughter – I’ve decided that I am going to open my own official killergram.”

The Monty Python actor captioned the post: “Due to the boredom of this quarantine I have decided to join Instagram. You can follow me there @johncleeseofficial You can follow me there for all sorts of fun things. #johncleese.”

Fans flocked to comment on the post, as one person quipped: “Awesome! Now what’s Instagram?”

Another person remarked: “I feel better knowing that the legendary John Cleese has the same wardrobe that I do.”

A third social media user said: “Instantgram. You are awesome,” while another person added: “Maybe @FAWLTYTOWERS should get an account as well.”

The actor has 11,000 followers so far on Instagram with his first post being his official announcement video.

It comes after John recently offered fans a chance to meet him via video call but the offer came at a hefty price.

The legendary actor and comic gave the details of the virtual meet and greet via US website Fanmio last month.

John offered to speak to his fans for a one-to-one chat via video call but it’ll cost £250 per person.

In a video to promote the event, the Fawlty Towers star said: “I trust I’ve given you a few laughs over the years and now I’d love to give you the chance to meet me and ask me questions… personally meet me on a one-on-one video meet and greet session.

“It’ll just be the two of us talking and you can ask me whatever you want.”

The site offers similar style chats with a string of American stars and includes John’s autograph and an exclusive shirt in the package deal.

The news comes years after the Monty Python star joked he had turned to the stage to pay his alimony following his divorce from his third wife Alyce Faye Eichelberger.
