John landed the role of second-hand car dealer Terrance ‘Boycie’ Boyce in 1981.
The show ran for ten years and returned for many Christmas specials over the years due to its popularity.
“He was a wonderful actor, a gentleman in the true sense of the word and I know he will be missed by so many,” his co-star Sir David said.
“I send my love and condolences to his wife, Carol,” he added.
John married his fourth wife Carol in Brighton in 1990.
The couple, who had no children, lived in 12th century Wigmore Abbey Grange in Herefordshire.
