John Boyega tangles with Star Wars fans over ‘sexist’ Instagram comments about Finn and Rey characters

John Boyega tangled the Star Wars fans Wednesday over a remark he made about the Finn and Rey characters on social media some found to be misogynistic and sexist.

The 27-year-old actor was in hot water with Star Wars faithful over an Instagram reply to a post that read, ‘my boy after realizing Kylo died so he can date Rey.’

The reference was to a plot point in the latest film in which Finn’s was shunned in his pursuit of Rey (Daisy Ridley), who is instead drawn to Kylo Ren (Adam Driver).

Boyega, who’s played Finn in The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, said in response, ‘It’s not about who she kisses but who eventually lays the pipe. You are a genius.’

Many fans took to social media to criticize the London native about his words and innuendo, claiming undertones of sexism and misogyny in his words.  

Boyega was quick to defend himself, with the prevailing sentiment being that he’s speaking about fictional characters who are consenting adults.

One fan wrote to Boyega, ‘Bro [you’re extremely] disgusting and gross also f***ing disrespectful…you cannot be this jealous of adam driver dude … as a black woman im f***ing ashamed that someone like you represented us in star wars.

Boyega replied: ‘You obviously don’t know the [difference] between a fictional world and reality.’

When one fan asked him, ‘Do you still have a crush on Daisy then?’ he replied, ‘Star Wars is a movie not a documentary.’

In response to another fan, he said, ‘Two consenting adults can lay down whatever the hell they want ya sensitive!

Boyega in all didn’t seem too fired up about about the flak he took over the remark, as he posted a GIF of the Joker celebrating, owning the controversy.

The upbeat star wished fans a happy new year as 2019 drew to a close. 

‘We did good SW fans! Now onwards to 2020!’ he said. ‘Job done ! Here’s to 2020! Love you all!’

It was another strong year for the actor, who appeared in the blockbuster anthology, which has taken more than $761 million in at the box office worldwide, with $377 million in domestic revenues.

He slated to appear in the 2020 crime drama Naked Singularity alongside Olivia Cooke and Bill Skarsgard, as well as the miniseries Small Axe.
