John Bercow savaged by furious caller who says Speaker thinks he is above the Queen

Hours before John Bercow sparked fury by rejecting Boris Johnson’s demand for a vote on his Brexit deal an enraged caller claimed the Speaker of the House of Commons was behaving as though he was above the Queen. The caller, introduced as Mike from Cheshire, started off by explaining he had been abroad in the USA recently. He said: “Some of the Americans I spoke to said they were confused about what was going on.

“I said join the club. We went to the ballot box and you went to war for independence.

“You’ve got yours and we’re still struggling.”

The caller then posed his question to talkRADIO host, Mike Graham, saying: “The question I was going to ask you was when I was away when did Mr Bercow marry the Queen and become the king?”

To which Mike Graham let out a chuckle.

Mike, the caller, continued: “King Bercow seems to rule now.”

Mr Graham then responded: “It’s worse than that, he has actually become the emperor of the United Kingdom now.

“He’s over and above the Queen now and he does what he wants to do.

“But unfortunately until such time that Bercow gets lost at the end of October he still holds all the cards really.”

Explaining his decision Mr Bercow said: “First, I have to judge whether the motion tabled is the same in substance as the same on Saturday.

“It is hard to see a significant change of circumstances that would warrant a reconsideration on the next sitting day.”

Mr Bercow continued: “It is a necessary rule to ensure a sensible use of the House’s time and proper respect for the decisions that it takes.

“If it is not legitimate for the motion to be taken today, what is legitimate for the Government to do? The answer is that, as the PM himself signalled on Saturday, the Government can introduce its EU withdrawal and implementation Bill. Indeed, it has done just that, presenting the bill for its first reading today.”
