Joe Cole admits he’s feeling ‘nervous’ for his former side Chelsea ahead of Sunday’s clash with Tottenham given the way Jose Mourinho is transforming the north London club.

Spurs are top of the Premier League table after winning six of their opening nine games this season and laid down a marker with their impressive 2-0 victory over Manchester City last weekend.

Tottenham found themselves in dire straits when Mauricio Pochettino was sacked a year ago, but the Argentine’s successor Mourinho has turned around the club’s fortunes.

Meanwhile, their London rivals Chelsea have also enjoyed a good start to the campaign following their extraordinary recruitment drive back in the summer transfer window.

The Blues spent big money on the likes of Kai Havertz, Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech and find themselves in third place in the table.

But Cole fears for Chelsea coming up against in-form Spurs at Stamford Bridge on Sunday with the mental strength Mourinho has instilled in his side.

‘I’m nervous,’ Cole said on Coral and JOE Media’s All to Play For podcast.

‘There seems to be something tangible changing at Tottenham.

‘They look like a team that’s got a little bit of strength of character now. The manager would’ve implemented that no doubt.

‘He’s cracked the whip, signings have been good, he’s got everyone on board.

‘That little touch he done with [Sergio] Reguilon where he said to him, ‘if you stop [Riyad] Mahrez dribbling past you I’ll buy you a leg of ham’, little things like that.
