Joe Cole blames Chelsea board after Bayern Munich thrashing

Joe Cole believes the Chelsea board let Frank Lampard down by failing to sign players in January, after they were thumped 3-0 by Bayern Munich at Stamford Bridge.

Bundesliga outfit Bayern were a class above the home side, with former Arsenal winger Serge Gnabry scoring twice in three minutes and lethal Polish striker Robert Lewandowski adding a third for good measure to all but eliminate the Blues from the Champions League.

Lampard has not signed a single player since being appointed Chelsea manager and there was some surprise that there was no investment in the squad in January, once Chelsea’s transfer ban had been lifted.

And former Blues midfielder Cole pointed the finger at the club’s hierarchy after the defeat, insisting the lack of recruitment had ‘definitely affected’ the result.

‘I think knowing this game was on the horizon, Frank would have been desperate to get players through the door,’ Cole told BT Sport.

‘You’ve asked Giroud, who’s done brilliant for you at the weekend, he’s not been fit and a 32-year-old striker to come and lead the line against probably one of the best sides in Europe as the moment, it just looked like he ran out of steam towards the end.

‘So not recruiting has definitely affected the performance and the team.

‘Bayern Munich were sublime from start to finish. We talked about the patterns of play, the passing, they just really drilled Chelsea tonight and it’s a momentous task for them going to Germany.’

Chelsea will have to bounce back quickly. They travel to Bournemouth this weekend as they look to continue their charge to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
