JK Rowling has said she has ‘completely recovered’ after suffering with symptoms of coronavirus.

The Harry Potter author said that she used a specific breathing technique to deal with her symptoms, although she did not know for sure if she had Covid-19 as she was not tested.

The 54-year-old writer shared a video from a doctor with a recommended technique to deal with respiratory symptoms, one that she said she had used herself while experiencing ‘all symptoms’ of the virus.

Rowling told her 14.5 million Twitter followers: ‘Please watch this doc from Queens Hospital explain how to relieve respiratory symptoms.

‘For last 2 weeks I’ve had all symptoms of C19 (tho haven’t been tested) & did this on doc husband’s advice.

‘I’m fully recovered & technique helped a lot.’

After receiving messages from fans and friends, she tweeted: ‘Thank you for your kind and lovely messages!

‘I really am completely recovered and wanted to share a technique that’s recommended by doctors, costs nothing, has no nasty side effects but could help you/your loved ones a lot, as it did me. Stay safe, everyone x’

In the video, the doctor advises people to follow the tried and tested technique if they have Covid-19 – or even before contracting the virus – to get as much air as possible into the bases of their lungs.

He says: ‘Take five deep breaths in, hold the breath for five seconds each time, on the sixth deep breath take it in and do a big cough, covering your mouth.’

He says to ‘do this twice’ before saying that people should then lie flat on their bed on their stomachs with a pillow in front of them, ‘taking slightly deeper breaths for the next ten minutes’.

The doctor explains that ‘the majority of your lungs is on your back, not on the front, so by lying on the back you are closing off more of the smaller airways and this is not good during a period of infection.’

Having demonstrated the technique himself, he then adds: ‘Lying in bed for prolonged periods on your back is going to close off the small airways, will increase the risk of getting the secondary pneumonia hat can make your condition deteriorate much further.’

Among those sending messages to Rowling following her revelation was Fifty Shades of Grey author EL James, who tweeted: ‘Glad you are fully recovered!’
