Peter Parker has a had a pretty rough life, whichever universe you’re looking at.

His beloved Uncle Ben was murdered by a burglar, and in the MCU, Spidey was left mentor-less after Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, sacrificed himself to defeat Thanos.

And the hits just keep coming in JJ Abrams new Spider-Man comic book series, as one of the closest people to him is killed.

Can’t the hero catch a break?

Episode one of Spider-Man picks up 12 years after an almighty battle between Spidery and villain Cadaverous, which saw Peter lose half his right arm…

… oh, and his wife Mary Jane.

Yep, MJ is immediately killed off by Abrams, leaving Peter without the love of his life and their son Ben without a mother.

The shocking twist sees Peter become an absentee father, resulting in his son Ben becoming a rebellious teenager who struggles as he realises he has the same web-slinging powers as his father.

Meanwhile, Peter has given up his superhero life to become a travelling photo journalist.

Well, he was great at getting pictures of Spider-Man, in fairness.

Spider-Man is the brainchild of Star Wars: The Force Awakens director JJ Abrams and his son Henry, and they are joined by legendary series artist Sara Pichelli, cover artist Olivier Coipel and colourist Dave Stewart.

While there’s tragedy happening in the comics, there’s just as much drama in the MCU, as Tom Holland’s Spider-Man will no longer appear alongside the Avengers following a clash between Disney and Sony.

The studios were unable to come to an agreement over money, so Spidey will no longer be part of the MCU – something Avengers: Endgame director Joe Russo thinks is a ‘tragic mistake’.

He told the Toronto Sun: ‘t was a tenuous, fraught union throughout the whole process. But, I will say, stepping back and trying to be objective as possible, that I think it’s a tragic mistake on Sony’s part to think that they can replicate Kevin [Feige]’s penchant for telling incredible stories and the amazing success he has had over the years.

‘‘I think it’s a big mistake.’
