Jet2: Shock moment woman restrained after allegedly trying to open plane door mid-flight

A Jet2 passenger had to be restrained after she tried to open a pane door mid-flight, a court heard today. A shocking photo taken at the scene appears to show Chloe Haines, of High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire on the floor of the aircraft. Haines is lying prostrate in the aircraft aisle, her stomach exposed, as her hands are held by another woman.

Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court was told Haines was restrained by both cabin crew and other passengers.

She allegedly scratched cabin crew member Charley Coombe during the debacle.

A former bouncer who claimed to have tackled her to the ground said she kicked, punched and screamed at the cabin crew, reported Metro after the incident in July.

He said: “She was only petite but she had the strength of a fully-grown man.

“The only time I’ve seen anything like that was when someone had just dropped acid, she had super strength.”

Amy Varol, who was sat behind Haines, told The Sun: “Then a man sat on her and one person was holding her leg and someone else holding the other one.

“That’s when she started screaming, ‘Get off me, I’m going to kill everyone’.

The flight from Stansted to Dalaman, Turkey had to be intercepted by two Typhoon fighters.

The planes then guided the Airbus 321 back to Stansted, where Haines was arrested by Essex Police.

Haines appeared in court today but did not enter a plea. She spoke only to confirm her name, age and address in the brief hearing.

Images of Haines leaving Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court appear to show her in tears.

She was later charged with assault by beating and a reckless or negligent act in a manner likely to endanger aircraft or people in an aircraft.

District Judge Timothy King granted Haines bail on the condition she must not enter any UK airport and sent the case to crown court where she will enter a plea.

He said: “This matter is too serious to be dealt with at this court.

“All matters will be dealt with at Chelmsford Crown Court, your next appearance will be four weeks today, on December 18 at Chelmsford Crown Court.”

Jet2 said in a statement following the incident that Haines had been slapped with an £85,000 bill and a lifetime ban from the airline, reported MailOnline.

Steve Heapy, chief executive of Jet2.com and Jet2holidays, said: “Miss Haines’ behaviour was one of the most serious cases of disruptive passenger behaviour that we have experienced.

“She must now face up to the consequences of her actions, and we will vigorously pursue to recover the costs that we incurred as a result of this divert, as we do with all disruptive passengers.

“As a family-friendly airline, we take an absolutely zero tolerance approach to disruptive behaviour, and we hope that this sobering incident, with its very serious consequences, provides a stark warning to others who think that they can behave in this fashion.”
