Jess Glynne's history of pulling out of events – as she cancels more gigs for 'vocal rest'

Jess Glynne was banned from performing at the Isle of Wight Festival for life after she cancelled her gig just minutes before she was due on stage in what appears to be the habit of a lifetime.

And, less than a fortnight later, she’s now revealed she’s cancelling a host of upcoming shows on the advice of her vocal surgeon.

In a long Twitter statement, Jess confirmed she had been partying with the Spice Girls the night before her scheduled festival gig, but claimed she’d also been suffering from anxiety about her voice.

“It absolutely kills me to say this – especially given what has happened in the past few weeks – but on the advice of my vocal surgeon, I am going to have to cancel my next shows through until July 14th and I hope to back as soon as possible after that,” she wrote.

And it turns out the Rather Be singer has a track record for pulling out gigs – and sometimes at the very last minute. Here’s everything you need to know…

Cancelled gigs in June and July 2019

Days after her festival cancellation, Jess confirmed she was going to pull out of at least six upcoming gigs on the advice of her surgeon.

In a Twitter statement, she wrote: “It absolutely kills me to say this – especially given what has happened in the past few weeks – but on the advice of my vocal surgeon, I am going to have to cancel my next shows through until July 14th and I hope to back as soon as possible after that,” she wrote.

“I know many of my fans feel I let them down so badly when I pulled out of the Isle Of Wright Festival but the reason I knew I just wasn’t going to be able to make that performance has now been made clear to [me] by my doctor, Dr Zeitels.”

She went on: “Two days ago I came to Boston to see my surgeon who told me my vocal chord has haemorrhaged and that if I want to remain as a performer I needed to urgently take a break, rest my voice completely for the next 10 days and try and remain in total silence to give my vocal chords a chance to recover.

“The thing is I am my voice. If my voice goes, I go. I am so privileged to do what I do, I am so privileged to have fans out there who come and see me. But I never want to be less than 100 percent.”

Isle of Wight Festival 2019

Fans gathered to see Jess at the Isle of Wight Festival in June 2019, but just 10 minutes before she was due on it was announced she wouldn’t be performing.

Festival boss John Giddings appeared on stage to say the gig had been cancelled, leaving some of her fans in tears.

Her management initially blamed her no show on exhaustion and Jess put her decision to cancel down to anxiety.

She wrote on Instagram: “I was incredibly weak and full of anxiety. I can’t help that my body sometimes gives up on me. I am so, so gutted, sorry and upset I couldn’t perform.”

She blamed her anxiety

Jess had supported the Spice Girls at Wembley Stadium the night before, and stayed behind for the afterparty, which was attended by celebrity superfans including Adele.

She was seen leaving the stadium at 5am on Sunday with some friends and Mel B and they continued partying at a nearby hotel until at least 7am.

Mr Giddings slammed her “shocking behaviour” and banned her from the festival for life.

He said: “She will never be booked to play the Isle of Wight again.”

Isle of Wight 2015

This wasn’t even the first time Jess has pulled out of the Isle of Wight festival, as she had to cancel her gig in 2015 to undergo vocal chord surgery.

She made the announcement just a week before the event and was replaced by Ella Eyre.

Jess said at the time: “I am so so sad to tell you that I’m having to have vocal surgery next week. I’m so sorry and it kills me but I have to cancel some forthcoming shows and festivals.

“I’m a little scared but I will be back singing better than ever very soon!”
