Jeremy Kemp dead: Z Cars actor dies aged 84 after health problems


The actor, who was born Edmund Jeremy James Walker, passed away on July 19, having faced “considerable health issues” for some time. Jeremy began his career in the Army but went into acting after completing his military service. He joined the BBC Radio Drama Company in 1958 after winning the Carleton Hobbs Bursay alongside Eva Gaddon.

 

As reported by The Daily Star, Jeremy enjoyed a number of small roles in the early part of his career.

Jeremy’s big break came in 1962 when he joined the original cast of Z Cars.

The drama followed the work of a group of police officers in the fictional Newton, based on Kirkby on Merseyside.

Jeremy starred in 34 episodes during the first two series.

Michael Caine was reported to have turned down the role that Jeremy took up.

Despite leaving the show over fears of being typecast, he returned in 1978 for the final episode and played a vagrant.

He would later star as an RAF briefing officer in war epic A Bridge Too Far.

Jeremy would portray several army men in the years following the film.

He was seemingly aided with his military past and 6ft2in stature.

In 1983 TV mini-series The Winds of War he portrayed Brigadier General Armin von Room and General Gates in George Washington a year later.

He also featured as General Streck in Top Secret! and Colonel Patrick Gordon in Peter the Great.

Jeremy would reprise his role as Von Roon in War and Remembrance before starring as General de Pellieux in the 1991 TV movie Prisoner of Horror.

He would also feature in Star Trek: The Next Generation as Robert Picard, brother to Captain Jean-Luc.

In the second wedding of Four Weddings and a Funeral in 1994, he featured as Sir John Delaney.

Reports claim his heath declined following the death of his partner, Christopher Hartner.

Jeremy is survived by two sisters, Gill and Jan.
