Jeremy Corbyn vows to fight Boris Johnson in election despite polls revealing he is destroying Labour’s chances

JEREMY Corbyn has vowed to take on Boris Johnson at an election – despite polls revealing he is ruining Labour’s chances.

His comments today came as results showed voters are looking more favourably on the Tories since Mr Johnson became Prime Minister, and think Labour would be better without Mr Corbyn.

He told Sky News he is “not in the slightest” concerned about facing Mr Johnson.

And added: “Parliament goes back in September and I think it is at that point we will look at the situation there.

“But it is also up to the prime minister what he decides to do as well because if he is trying to take us out on a No Deal Brexit at the end of October we will oppose that.”

A Deltapoll survey for the Mail on Sunday puts the Tories on 30 per cent, up from 20 per cent – turning a six-point lead for Mr Corbyn over Theresa May into a five-point advantage for Mr Johnson.

The poll even suggested Mr Corbyn is partly responsible for Labour’s loss of points.

Today, when asked if Labour now supported a second referendum in all circumstances, Mr Corbyn said: “What we are saying is, No Deal we oppose and we think people should have a final choice on it.

“We could have a vote then between Remain or whatever option Boris Johnson decides to put to them at that time.”

Mr Johnson, 55, only became the new Prime Minister on July 24 but has already given the Conservative Party widespread popular appeal.

FIGHTING TALK

He hit the ground running in his first few days in Number 10 as he got to work on a number of domestic issues and started to tackle the Brexit issue.

The PM has ruled out “absolutely” calling a general election before the Brexit deadline of October 31.

But there is still speculation that a snap general election could be called to try and defeat Mr Corbyn.

The PM said: “The British people voted in 2015, in 2016, in 2017. What they want us to do is deliver on their mandate, come out of the EU on October 31.

“They don’t want another electoral event, they don’t want a referendum, they don’t want a general election. They want us to deliver.”

Yesterday Mr Corbyn was accused of a U-turn on violent crime today after claiming it can’t be solved by hiring more cops.

The Labour leader scoffed at Mr Johnson’s plan to put an extra 20,000 officers on the streets.

But Tories pointed out he spent the past two years blaming lack of police numbers for soaring crime levels.
