Jennifer Lopez and Shakira say their Super Bowl show will be ‘like an explosion’ and mean so much for the Latino community

The announcement that Jennifer Lopez and Shakira will headline the Super Bowl 2020 halftime show set the Internet ‘on fire’ and the singers say they are stoked to have the spotlight on powerful Latina women.

In an interview about the news JLo said she ‘loves that [Super Bowl 2020] is in Miami’ because ‘it is a very Latino town’, while Shakira said she ‘incredibly honoured and humbled’ to be next to JLo ‘representing the Latino community’.

‘They are such an important force in the United States,’ she said.

Jennifer continued: ‘I love that the Super Bowl has two women performing this year, that they have two Latinas.

‘For me it’s the 100th anniversary but it’s also a marker of time, and a new time, not just for the NFL but also for this country.

‘It sends an important message to the world, to everyone.’

Shakira said: ‘it’s gonna mean a lot for our community, here in the US and abroad.

‘And for women,’ JLo added.

The Jenny From The Block singer said ‘At the end of the day, it’s about making a statement of love and unity and making everybody come together, just for a moment, and hopefully that that resonates.’

The Whenever, Wherever singer expressed her gratitude in response to the news absolutely taking off: ‘Wow! I never expected such an amazing global response! Thank you so much for your support. It means the world to me.’

The political significance of the musical double act wasn’t lost on fans with plenty of sassy reactions to the news.

One fan wrote: ‘The fact that two Latin artists are performing the Super Bowl Half Time Show in America’s current climate is just… delicious.’

Another wrote: ‘If you think conservatives were mad when Beyoncé brought Black Panthers to the Super Bowl, wait till Shakira shows up on their screens speaking Spanish.’

One fan shared some stunning art of the two legendary Latina popstars, writing on Instagram: ‘I just Felt Like posting my JLo & Shakira Artwork! the Phoenix and Cheetah! Latina Power.’

Another fan was just overwhelmed in the presence of two powerful women supporting each other, writing: ‘But wow JLo and Shakira posted each other’s pics on twitter.’

On what the two singers might have in store for their big performance JLo said they ‘haven’t even talked about what they’re going to do’.

‘Now the announcement is made we can get into the creative part of it but we never have performed together so that’s going to be exciting.’

The two then proceeded to fangirl over each other with Shakira saying JLo is ‘a champion in everything she does’ while JLo called Shakira ‘such a dynamic performer’ and that there’s ‘nobody like her’.

Stop it already we can’t take it!

‘It’s gonna be an exciting show,’ Jennifer said ‘kind of like an explosion.’

The game will be kicking off on 2 February, 2020, so we still have a good few months to recover from this news.

Maroon 5 fronted the last Super Bowl half-time show, and were joined by Travis Scott and Big Boi on the night.
