Jennifer Aniston's hair colourist has hailed 'foliage' as the colouring technique of summer 2019

As far as iconic hairstyles go, Jennifer Aniston‘s ‘The Rachel‘ sits comfortably at the top. That cut, those honey highlights – it was a true masterpiece.

Co-creators of the 90s ‘do everyone had to have, Chris McMillan (stylist) and Michael Canalé (colourist) both still work with Jen, with Michael renowned for his ability to create beautiful, natural-looking and healthy colour.

In his 30+ year career, he’s seen all the trends come and go; from rose gold hair to the much-loved balayage. And as the season change is upon us, GLAMOUR got the inside scoop on what he predicts will be the big hair colour trends for summer 2019, plus his top tips for maintaining your healthy colour at home. Get ready to take note…

  • Foliage: “I’ve been seeing a technique called “foliage” where colourists are foiling the hair for highlights and free painting the ends for more of a blonde pop.”
  • Scandi Blonde: “I think both men and women are going to start playing more with pop colours. So far the ‘Scandi’ iced out blonde look has been popular. Celebrities like Zach Efron, Adam Levine, and Pete Davidson have been rocking that platinum look.”
  • Light To Dark: “I think people will start transitioning from light to dark to spark up a little change. Actresses like Charlize Theron and Christina Ricci have already made the change over to the dark side.”

How to maintain your colour at home

Love how your hair looks when you leave the salon, but then suffer from dullness just days later?

“Avoid using hot tools on your hair and over-washing”, says Michael. “And look at changing out your hair products.”

He recommends finding a shampoo and conditioner combo that battles the oxidation of hair colour, like his own Canalé Cleanse and Soften (available at canalesalon.com). A take-home gloss can also help with shine and colour vibrancy.

If greys are your main concern, Michael says he’ll “add highlights [to the area] to blend out the grey for a seamless connection”, so perhaps ask your stylist to do the same. Otherwise, “changing where you part your hair or the way you style it can help to avoid the harshness of the grey regrowth.”

Michael’s homemade hair mask recipe

Like many celebrities, Michael is also a big fan of coconut oil for the hair: “Apply it straight from the jar onto your hair for extra protein and shine. It helps to nourish the scalp and increases hair growth.”

But he also shared another at-home mask recipe, which he says is great for reviving over-processed hair. Simply mash together: “Banana, honey and olive oil”.

We just might have to give that a try…
