‘I hope the fans walk away with a sense of what it was like for us to have made the show,’ said Matt.

It’s been emotional revisiting the show 17 years after the series ended.

‘I don’t think they – the – any of us had any idea how emotional we would be when we walked onto the set,’ Courteney said.

‘To see it exactly the way it was, the – literally besides the cookie jar that Lisa took home and the neon coffee thing that Jen took. Besides that, it was exactly the same. And it was so emotional that we just started crying.’

Matthew, 51, added, ‘Reuniting this cast again – I knew it was gonna be a really seriously emotional experience. And it has been.’

‘Truth is, I didn’t cry walking out onto the set,’ Lisa, who played Phoebe Buffay, admitted. ‘And now I can’t stop.’

‘Floodgates open,’ Jennifer, 52, agreed.

The special was supposed to be released in 2020 but was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

‘We wanted to do it a year ago to give back to all of the fans especially in the dark times we were all experiencing. Hopefully a year later, people will still enjoy it and it will cheer some folks up,’ added David.

It comes as the show’s stars revealed they had an unspoken rule not to date each other while filming the series.

Although the cast saw their sitcom alter egos hook up with one another at various times on the show, the group insisted their chemistry never spilled over into real life because they were determined not to ‘mess with’ the bond they had on screen.

Matthew said: ‘There was a rule, it was really important to the six of us, that we kept a friendship. Hooking up could have caused a strangeness that might mess with things. And we are really good friends to this day.’

David added: ‘We didn’t want to jeopardise any of the great relationships and friendships we had established. It was kind of an unspoken rule.’

But Courteney insisted it was never a subject she’d spoken to anyone about.

She told Access Hollywood: ‘It’s a smart idea, but I don’t remember talking about it.’

Meanwhile, Jennifer admitted her ex-husband, Brad Pitt, was one of her favourite guest stars on the show thanks to his 2001 appearance in the sitcom’s Thanksgiving episode, The One With the Rumour.

He played Will Colbert, who joined his former classmates Rachel, Monica and Ross for dinner, with the fashionista unaware he hates her and starts the ‘I Hate Rachel Green’ club.

Discussing their favourite guests, the stars mentioned Tom Selleck, Giovanni Ribisi, Sean Penn, Alec Baldwin and Charlie Sheen as among the best.

Lisa said: ‘I was blown away by so many. Ben Stiller was really funny. I thought Reese [Witherspoon] was fantastic… Paul Rudd was great.’

Jennifer then said of her then-husband: ‘And Mr Pitt was wonderful.’

Lisa agreed: ‘He was fantastic!’

On Tuesday Extra’s Rachel Lindsay caught up with the actors to chat about what fans can expect, the stars’ first impressions of one another, and more.

Matthew teased, ‘You’ll see love, you’ll see loss, you’ll see guest stars, you’ll see surprises, you’ll see game shows.’

David added, ‘You’ll see the six of us in the same room for the first time in at least nine years, if not 17… We don’t want to give any spoilers, but it’s not just the six of us watching clips of the show and commenting about it… It’s a much more interesting and also nostalgic kind of special.’

When Lindsay asked for their first impressions of one another, Matt turned to look at Matthew, then joked, ‘I liked David,’ before laughing and patting Perry on the back.

He went on, ‘Everyone was so different and so unique, and I remember the first table read and everyone’s delivery and I was like… that’s such an interesting way to say that joke and wow, that’s funny.’

He feels it: Perry, 51, added, 'Reuniting this cast again - I knew it was gonna be a really seriously emotional experience. And it has been'

David added, ‘The person I couldn’t imagine was Chandler… and until I met Matthew and we did the table read and I was like, ‘Well, no one else could play that guy… because that’s great.’

Matthew is engaged to his Hollywood talent manager, Molly Hurwitz.

Rachel congratulated the star, who thanked her as LeBlanc told her: ‘We’re very happy for him.’

Fans can watch the reunion special May 27 on HBO Max.
