It might be hard to believe but Jay Z doesn’t love his entire catalogue of music, admitting there is one particular album that ‘haunts’ him to this day.

The Big Pimpin’ rapper returned to Twitter this weekend to share a rare tweet amid a discussion about his second album In My Lifetime, Vol. 1, which was released in 1997.

It all kicked off on Sunday when a fan tweeted the music video for Jay Z’s song (Always Be My) Sunshine featuring Foxy Brown and Babyface, which was the lead single for the album.

They wrote: ‘Hot take: “Sunshine” by Jay-Z was fine and got an unnecessarily bad rap. Actually holds up better now than it did then.’

Roots star Questlove spotted the tweet and shared this thoughts, writing: ‘Our main argument is his hate for Vol 1. He is embarrassed for trying to make a monster & not putting numbers up. But ALOT of this lp contains his best moments. Fight me @sc.’

Tagging Jay Z directly seemed to do the trick as the rapper waded into the debate soon after, confessing: ‘Agreed . More so, I know what could have been,  so it haunts me … streets is watching was the first song made !’

Some felt the Grammy-winning lyricist was being too hard on himself, as one fan commented: ‘But if you listen to Volume he had some solid work on that album.’

Another agreed: ‘F**k the haters vol 1 is a classic.’

One other supporter praised: ‘Other albums where way worse then this hes crazy [sic].’

Many others argued that Sunshine wasn’t a bad song but didn’t fit in with Jay Z’s authentic hip hop image in the ‘90s, as one weighed in: ‘I liked it a lot, it was just so jarringly commercial for Jay and that was frowned upon back then. Today it wouldn’t matter.’

Agreeing with the sentiment, one supporter tweeted: ‘It was the wrong fit for that artist at that time IMO.  A few years later Jay and especially a decade later Jay would’ve made this a smash.  This era Jay it was a wrong fit for.’

Either way, it’s safe to say that Sunshine never makes the tour setlist.

My Lifetime, Vol. 1  was released a year after Jay Z’s critically acclaimed debut album Reasonable Doubt. Vol 1 reached number three on the Billboard 200 chart but it was the follow-up, Vol. 2… Hard Knock Life that earned the rapper his first chart-topper.

Jay Z, 52, has held some controversial opinions of late as he recently sparked a debate after comparing his wife Beyonce to Michael Jackson, arguing that the late Thriller hitmaker ‘never had a Coachella’.
