Jay Aston of Eurovision winners Bucks Fizz to stand as an MP for Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party

A FORMER signer with Eurovision winners Bucks Fizz is running for Parliament – with Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party.

Jay Aston – one of the quartet that sang ‘Making Your Mind Up’ in 1981 – said she wanted to fight to “uphold democracy”.

Ms Aston will contest Kensington in any upcoming Election. The seat is currently held by arch Labour leftie Emma Dent Coad – who has sparked uproar with a series of attacks on the Royal family.

The 58 year-old is understood to have approached the Brexit Party after their success in the European Elections earlier this May.

Former colleague Cheryl Baker backed Brexit in 2016 – but insisted Britain shouldn’t pull out of the singing contest.

Ms Aston said: “I used to live in Kensington and it still feels like home.

“I want to stand for the Brexit Party and fight to uphold democracy for the sake of the people.”

She added: “As an MP I will work to rebuild trust and help the Brexit Party make the necessary reforms to unite the country after we break free of the European Union.”

‘FEELS LIKE HOME’

Mr Farage announced the Brexit Party had a list of 635 “approved” candidates.

The arch Brexiteer insisted he was prepared to stand a candidate in “every seat” against the Tories unless Boris Johnson pursues a No Deal Brexit.

He said: “If Boris Johnson is prepared to do the right thing for the independence of this country, then we would put country before party and do the right thing.

“We would be prepared to work with him, perhaps in the form of a non-aggression pact at the general election.”

Party chairman Richard Tice said: “There’s going to be a general election and we are ready.

“I think I can confidently predict that we are more prepared than any other party.”

Bucks Fizz charmed the nation in 1981 after it was specifically formed for the Eurovision contest.

They won headlines for the dance routine that accompanied the song – as the two male members ripped off the ladies’ outer skirts to reveal mini-skirts beneath.

Jay Aston quit the group in 1985 after a string of hits. David van Day – one half of ex-pop duo – joined the Tories as a Brexiteer councillor in March. He joined a latter day version of Bucks Fizz in the 1990s.
