Jane Fonda has been arrested in Washington DC amid a climate change protest.

The 81-year-old actress had promised action in an earlier interview and followed through with her threats, taking to the US Capitol building steps on Friday morning where police placed her in plastic ties.

Wearing a long red coat, she was walked away by police officers as fellow protestors cheered and called out ‘we love you Jane’.

‘I’m going to take my body, which is kind of famous and popular right now because of the [television] series and I’m going to go to D.C. and I’m going to have a rally every Friday,’ she said.

‘It’ll be called Fire Drill Friday. And we’re going to engage in civil disobedience and we’re going to get arrested every Friday.’

The Grace and Frankie star told the Washington Post she was inspired by 16-year-old activist Greta Thunberg, and added that the teen had ‘realised what was happening and that this was barreling at us like an engine’.

‘It so traumatised her that she stopped speaking and eating. And when I read that, it rocked me because I knew that Greta had seen the truth. And the urgency came into my DNA the way it hadn’t before.’

She said: ‘Greta said we have to behave like it’s a crisis. We have to behave like our houses are on fire.’
