Jamie Redknapp debates 8 potential candidates for next Tottenham manager

Jamie Redknapp has run the rule over eight prospective candidates to succeed Jose Mourinho as permanent Tottenham boss in the summer.

Ryan Mason is filling the role on an interim basis but is not expected to land the gig full-time, despite leading the team in Sunday’s 1-0 Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City.

Various names have been thrown into the proverbial hat since Mourinho’s sacking on Monday, though Redknapp has questioned the suitability of the bookies’ favourites.

Ex-Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri is currently leading the odds to be appointed by Daniel Levy, but Redknapp was uncertain on the Italian as he stressed how important this decision was for Tottenham’s future.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Redknapp said: “They need to make sure they get the next one right in charge, there’s a lot of pressure now on the board to get it right because they’ve made decisions that haven’t worked out.

“It didn’t work out with Jose Mourinho, they hired a manager that sort of went away from the Spurs way of playing in terms of the style and the Spurs fans didn’t like it.

“Now, the next manager coming in has got to be the right one, they’ve got to get this right otherwise the pressure will really grow.”

The name on everyone’s lips has been Red Bull Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann, but the 33-year-old is in the frame to take up the reins at Bayern Munich when Hansi Flick leaves his post at the end of the campaign to manage the German national team.

Nagelsmann is reported to have already entered talks with Bayern over the role, leaving slim pickings for Spurs to choose from, with Wolves‘ boss Nuno Espirito Santo, Southampton’s Ralph Hasenhuttl and former Tottenham star turned Fulham manager Scott Parker all under consideration.

“You look at the odds here,” Redknapp said. “Sarri, that will not excite the Spurs fans one bit, not one bit.

“If you look at Nagelsmann, Hansi Flick is going to take the Germany job it looks like, so you’d imagine Nagelsmann will go to Bayern.

“Santo, does that excite me? Not sure. Scott Parker, it looks like he might be going down with Fulham, but he worked at Spurs for a while and played good football, so Daniel Levy might like some of that.

“Ryan Mason at 10/1, you’re not backing him, [Brighton’s] Graham Potter, Rafa [Benitez], no.

“Brendan Rodgers is a manager who Daniel Levy tried to get a few years back but would you leave Leicester right now, where you’ve really established something? It’s a really big club, but so is Tottenham. I don’t know whether it would interest Brendan.”

Speaking after Tottenham’s cup final defeat, Mason gave an insight into how he wants the team to play for at least the remainder of the season while he is at the helm.

“I think City are probably four or five years ahead of us,” Mason said. “In terms of they have had a manager for such a long time and they have worked a certain way for such a long time.

“Going forward, my idea and I am sure everyone’s idea at Tottenham, is to be brave and try to dominate games like they do. It is a process. It takes time.

“The fact that the players believed in the way we wanted to approach the game, that says a lot and tells me they want to work this way.

“Obviously going forward more confidence on the ball, more arrogance, but we have only worked this way for the best part of a week.”
