Jamie Lee Curtis celebrates 22 years of being sober as she reflects on hiding addiction

Jamie Lee Curtis has marked reaching 22 years sober while reflecting on her struggles with addiction.

The actress, 62, famed for starring in movies such as Freaky Friday, Halloween and Trading Places, celebrated her sobriety with fans in an Instagram post.

Sharing a throwback picture of her posing with a glass of wine, Jamie recalled being ‘at war’ with herself and choosing to ‘hide’ her addiction battle.

Alongside the snap, she posted a candid message that read: ‘A LONG time ago… In a galaxy far, far away… I was a young STAR at WAR with herself.

‘I didn’t know it then. I chased everything. I kept it hidden. I was a sick as my secrets.’

Jamie continued: ‘With God’s grace and the support of MANY people who could relate to all the ‘feelings’ and a couple of sober angels…I’ve been able to stay sober, one day at a time, for 22 years.

‘I was a high bottom, pun kind of intended, so the rare photo of me proudly drinking in a photo op is very useful to help me remember.’

Reaching out to those going through a similar battle, Jamie offered her support as she said: ‘To all those struggling and those who are on the path…MY HAND IN YOURS.’

Jamie has openly spoken of her addiction to painkillers and alcohol and previously revealed that getting sober has been her ‘greatest accomplishment’.

Her addiction began in the 1980s when she was prescribed opiates to treat pain she had following surgery. That prescription led to an an addiction that lasted 10 years, with the Hollywood star stealing painkillers from friends and family and hiding her struggles from everyone.

Speaking to Variety in 2018, Jamie revealed: ‘I was the wildly controlled drug addict and alcoholic… No one knew at all. Not one person knew except the people I would get [the painkillers] from.’

Jamie’s sister Kelly was the first to learn of her addiction in 1998, as she confessed to stealing her sibling’s prescription bottle of painkillers.

The star attended her first recovery meeting the following year in February 1999 – telling her husband Christopher Guest – who she shares children Annie, 24, and Thomas, 24, with – about her addiction the same day.

Since then, Jamie has been sober for over two decades and reflecting on her journey, she previously told People magazine: ‘Getting sober remains my single greatest accomplishment… bigger than my husband, bigger than both of my children and bigger than any work, success, failure. Anything.’

Jamie has a history of addiction in her family and revealed she once took drugs with her father Tony Curtis, who abused cocaine, heroin and alcohol.

Her half-brother Nicholas Curtis died from a heroin overdose in 1994.
