Jamie Carragher reacts to Rafa Benitez's 'Liverpool now have good defenders' comment

Rafa Benitez momentarily forgot he was in the company of Jamie Carragher when claiming Liverpool’s recent success is a direct result of them now having good defenders.

To be fair to the former Reds boss, who won the Champions League in 2005, he was talking about Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool from 2015 compared to today’s team, rather than the squad of players he managed in his time at Anfield.

But that didn’t stop Carragher seizing on his opportunity to jokingly remind Benitez that he was a defender at Liverpool, and wasn’t all that bad.

On Sky Sports, Benitez was asked whether he thinks Liverpool will finally win a first Premier League title. He responded: “I think so, they are doing so well.

“They are very consistent. Normally you lose games and win games but they are very consistent and it’s difficult for them to lose games – especially in a row.”

The Spaniard continued: “I think they have been signing the right players in the past few years.

“Very good players in the right positions. They fit what the manager was looking for and they have a good balance, they have good defenders.”

At that moment Carragher interjected, asking with a smirk: “You had good defenders, didn’t you?”

To which Benitez replied: “I had some of them…”

Benitez went on: “They have a good balance, they have a good keeper, the defenders – the full backs who go forward – the strikers who have pace and ability and the midfielders press all the time.

“As soon as they attack you – if they give the ball away – they press you so it’s very difficult to counter-attack. It’s very difficult to create something and if you have a team that has plenty of possession they are so aggressive, so it’s not easy.

“And if you’re a team that likes to counter-attack they are so quick. We tried it at Newcastle United and we couldn’t go behind them, they were faster than our players.”
