Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher says his former club have made the right decision to reverse their ’embarrassing’ decision to furlough non-playing staff.

The Reds made an announcement on Monday to admit they were ‘wrong’ to place 200 non-playing staff members on the government’s job retention scheme.

Carragher was one of the most vocal critics of the club’s decision, labelling it as ’embarrassing’ earlier in the week.

The former England defender was live on Sky Sports when the news broke and he gave his reaction to reporter Geoff Shreeves.

‘My hope was that there was enough time that they would reverse this decision,’ said Carragher.

‘I was very angry when it came through. At this moment it is fair to say Liverpool are holders of European Cup, top of the Premier League, World Champions, they tick boxes there. People that aren’t Liverpool probably look at the club as a model of how to replicate how they’ve gone about things.

‘To get something so badly wrong I could not believe it. I don’t think any football club should do what Liverpool did a couple of days ago. I was embarrassed as a Liverpool fan.

‘I know there was two clubs before Liverpool in Spurs and Newcastle but in some ways I expected it because of Mike Ashley and Daniel Levy if i’m honest but not from Liverpool.

‘They’ve built themselves up, certainly in the last few years under these owners of ‘this means more’, the anthem of You’ll Never Walk Alonen, always looking back at Bill Shankly and socialist values so I thought it was a shocking decision they made.

‘I’m delighted now they’ve changed their minds but i still think it will leave a bitter taste with a lot of Liverpool supporters. What this did was it saved the club a few million pounds which is nothing, it cost the taxpayers a few million pounds which in the grand scheme of things isn’t the biggest amount ever but it embarrassed Liverpool supporters throughout the country.

‘Man City, Man Utd, Everton supporters, that’s all they’ve been getting all the time now, almost laughing at Liverpool. they’ve embarrassed themselves and their own supporters. I’m delighted they’ve changed their mind and i’m delighted they’ve seen sense.’
