Jamie Carragher explains why Carlo Ancelotti appointment would be a mistake by Arsenal

Jamie Carragher believes Arsenal would be making a mistake by appointing Carlo Ancelotti as their next permanent manager.

The Gunners named Freddie Ljungberg interim boss following the sacking of Unai Emery in November, with the club still on the lookout for a full-time replacement for the Spaniard.

And former Real Madrid , AC Milan and Chelsea manager Ancelotti is among those who has been heavily linked with the position, along with the likes of Ljungberg and Mikel Arteta, following his departure from Napoli on Tuesday.

However, despite his vast success across Europe, Carragher is not convinced that the Italian is the right man to turn things around at the Emirates Stadium.

“I don’t agree with Ancelotti,” the former Liverpool defender told Sky Sports . “I think Ancelotti makes very good teams even better and takes them this next step.

“This is a big job. This is a rebuilding job.

“I don’t think Ancelotti has ever really been into clubs before and taken a group of players like this.

“He’s always gone to top teams where it’s more about man-management and getting the best out of real top players, getting them onside.

Ljungberg has, so far, been unable turn things around at Arsenal , with the Gunners currently ninth in Premier League table and seven points adrift of the top four.

Monday’s victory at West Ham was their only win in their last nine league games and they missed the chance to close the gap on fourth-placed Chelsea against Manchester City on Sunday.

The North London club found themselves on the end of a heavy 3-0 home defeat against the defending champions, with two brilliant strikes from Kevin de Bruyne and a close-range finish from Raheem Sterling enough to give Pep Guardiola’s side all three points.
