Jamie Carragher and Gary Lineker go toe-to-toe over coverage of Liverpool vs Man Utd

Jamie Carragher and Gary Lineker became embroiled in a social media debate over their channels’ respective football coverage.

Carragher was once again a key figure on Sky Sports on Sunday for Liverpool’s win over Manchester United at Anfield.

After joining Gary Neville and Martin Tyler on commentary, Carragher made his way to the Sky studio where he got himself involved in a heated argument with Roy Keane.

Football fans across the world tuned in for the match and the conversation afterwards, with Carragher confirming Sky Sports’ viewing figures peaked at 3.9million.

That made it the second most-watched match in the channel’s history, only trailing Manchester United’s defeat to Manchester City in 2012.

Match of the Day host Lineker, who also fronts BT Sport’s Champions League coverage, was quick to respond with a cheeky jibe.

“Impressive. Only 400,000 less than Spurs v Boro in the FA Cup on BBC One,” he tweeted.

Carragher didn’t let it end there though and continued the argument with some stats of his own

.

He responded: “And 3.5M more than BT! Our pay TV competitors and your second channel!

“Your competitors ITV beat you by a million at the World Cup.”

That wasn’t the end of the debate either, with Lineker pointing at his place among the most watched TV programmes of the last decade.

BBC presenter Gary Lineker

“How about hosting 3 of the top 4 and 6 of the top 10 of the last decade. It’s a lead that’s nearly as big as Liverpool ’s,” he tweeted.

The former England striker also fronted the London 2012 Olympics, with the opening and closing ceremonies bringing in the most viewers.

Lineker also presented England’s Euro 2012 defeat to Italy and wins over Colombia and Sweden at the World Cup in 2018.
