James Bond and Game of Thrones star Diana Rigg dies aged 82


Dame Diana Rigg has died aged 82.

The sad news was announced on Twitter today.

Diana was known for playing Emma Peel in the 1960s hit show The Avengers, James Bond’s wife Teresa in 1969 film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service and in more recent years, she played Olenna in Game of Thrones.


Her agent shared the news in a statement released on Thursday, saying: “It is with tremendous sadness that we announce that Dame Diana Rigg died peacefully early this morning.

“She was at home with her family who have asked for privacy at this difficult time. Dame Diana was an icon of theatre, film, and television.

“She was the recipient of Bafta, Emmy, Tony and Evening Standard Awards for her work on stage and screen.

“Dame Diana was a much loved and admired member of her profession, a force of nature who loved her work and her fellow actors. She will be greatly missed.”


She was made a Dame in the 1994 Birthday Honours for her services to drama.

Diana’s most popular recent role was as Olenna Tyrell in Game Of Thrones, which she held from 2013 until 2017.

The character was killed off by Jaime Lannister in season seven.

Born in Doncaster in 1938, Diana started her career in theatre with roles in Royal Shakespeare Company productions in the early sixties.

From 1961 to 1969 she played secret agent Emma Peel in 51 episodes of The Avengers.

She became a Bond girl in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service opposite George Lazenby.
