Jamal Edwards remembered by Chelsea fans with round of applause in poignant moment at Stamford Bridge

Jamal Edwards has been remembered in a poignant moment as Chelsea’s game against Lille at Stamford Bridge was paused for a round of applause in memory of the late entrepreneur.

Fans across the stadium clapped for the star, who died at the age of 31 this week, in the 31st minute of the game.

Supporters were heard chanting: ‘Jamal Edwards, he’s one of our own’.

Fans shared the powerful moment, with one writing: ‘You know you’ve left a legacy when you get a minutes applause at Stamford Bridge. RIP Jamal Edwards.’

‘Jamal Edwards he’s one of our own,’ another said, while one more added: ‘Chelsea fans clapping on the 31st minute for Jamal Edwards. Things you love to see.’

Edwards, a lifelong Chelsea fan, is said to have died of a heart attack.

His mother, Loose Women star Brenda Edwards, announced the devastating news in a statement reading: ‘It is with the deepest heartache that I can confirm that my beautiful son Jamal Edwards passed away yesterday morning after a sudden illness.

‘Myself, his sister Tanisha and the rest of his family and friends are completely devastated. He was the centre of our world.

‘As we come to terms with his passing we ask for privacy to grieve this unimaginable loss. I would like to thank everyone for their messages of love and support.

‘Jamal was an inspiration to myself and so many. Our love for him lives on, his legacy lives on. Long live Jamal Edwards MBE, MBA, PHD.’

A vigil was held for the late star on Monday evening, with Brenda attending and beautifully singing The Greatest Love Of All for her son.

Edwards rose to prominence after setting up SBTV in 2006, and was credited with helping to launch a string of UK music acts to stardom, including Ed Sheeran, Dave and Jessie J.
