Jada Pinkett Smith has broken her silence on the Oscars slap

Jada Pinkett Smith has broken her silence on that infamous Oscars slap, almost three months since it happened.

Pinkett Smith addressed the controversy involving her husband Will Smith and comedian Chris Rock on the latest episode of her Facebook Watch talk show, Red Table Talk, which aired on Wednesday 1st June.

Looking directly at the camera – and noticeably without the presence of her two co-hosts, daughter Willow Smith and mother Adrienne Banfield-Norris – Pinkett Smith said: “Now, about Oscar night. My deepest hope is that these two intelligent, capable men have the opportunity to heal, talk this out, and reconcile.

“The state of the world today? We need ’em both. And we all actually need on another more than ever. Until then, Will and I are continuing to do what we have done for the last 28 years: And that’s keep figuring out this thing called life together”.

Though Jada Pinkett Smith didn’t name Chris Rock by name, it’s clear she’s addressing the incident which took place at the 2022 Academy Awards on 27th March. While presenting the award for Best Documentary feature, Rock said: “Jada, I love you, G.I. Jane Two, can’t wait to see it,” – seemingly mocking Jada’s alopecia-related hair loss.

Will Smith then approached the stage and slapped Rock, before returning to his seat and shouting: “Keep my wife’s name out your f***ing mouth.”

Will Smith apologised days later, but has since been banned from attending the Oscars for a decade. Jada then seemed to acknowledge the incident with an ambiguous Instagram post, which read: “This is a season for healing and I’m here for it.”

Chris acknowledged the incident at the same time, during his US tour in Boston. He jokingly asked the crowd, “How was your weekend?” before explaining, “I’m still kind of processing what happened, so at some point, I’ll talk about that. And it’ll be serious and it’ll be funny, but right now I’m going to tell some jokes.”

Pinkett Smith spent the rest of the Red Table Talk episode discussing alopecia, explaining that 127 million people live with the condition, and the anxiety of watching her hair grow back just to watch it fall out again.
