Jacob Rees-Mogg lays down rules for Commons staff demanding imperial measurements and that men be called ‘esquire’

OLD-fashioned Jacob Rees-Mogg has told his new staff to use imperial measurements instead of metric — and to refer to men as “esquire”.

The Leader of the House of Commons has also banned them from using words such as “hopefully”, “got” and “very”.

Mr Rees-Mogg, 50, is known for his love of tradition and fogeyish appearance. His local office staff drew up the dos and don’ts on his orders years ago.

He handed the memo to his Commons team his new team this week after they asked how he liked letters to be written.

Leaks to ITV News show the rules include “all non-titled males” should be addressed as “Esq.” and that male MPs who are not in the Privy Council “should have Esq. before MP.”
