Jack Monroe responds to Katie Hopkins losing her home after libel case

Food writer Jack Monroe has spoken out after it was revealed Katie Hopkins has been forced to sell her £1million mansion and move into rented property after losing a libel case.

Last year, the ex Apprentice contestant was forced to pay out hundreds of pounds in damages for tweets in 2015 that falsely accused Jack of supporting the defacement of war memorials.

Jack initially asked Katie to apologise and donate £5,000 to a migrants charity. But when Katie refused to back down, Jack decided to settle in court.

Yesterday, it was revealed Katie – who previously said poor people had nobody to blame but themselves – had sold off her Devon family home.

Jack Monroe said she was not rejoicing about Katie’s downfall

Jack, who campaigns on poverty issues, has since spoken out to say she was ‘not rejoicing’ in the downfall of Katie.

The writer and activist also revealed that she even offered to give Katie the libel win back after their court case – but she refused.

Taking to Twitter , the mum wrote: “Hello! Just a quick note to say – I’m not rejoicing in anyone’s downfall here. It’s graceless and hideous. She just had to say sorry, she wouldn’t, and she’s paid dearly for that. /1

“I offered to give the libel win back afterwards, she didn’t want it. I didn’t want this, I just wanted some peace. And now I’m quietly (mostly) getting on with my life, writing my books, doing the work I wasn’t able to do in that 18 month trial period. /2.”

Monroe finished by saying she wished Katie ‘all the best for the future,’ “which is entirely in her own hands,” she added.

As well as losing her family home to pay off the £500,000 legal bill, far-rght activist Hopkins was also sacked from two lucrative newspaper columns and her LBC radio show.

Speaking to The Sunday Times this weekend, Hopkins complained hat speaking her mind lost her her career – having compared migrants crossing the Mediterranean in dinghies to “cockroaches” and claiming she’d use gunships to prevent people from landing on European shores.

“I live in a rented, modern, four-bedroom detached house with my husband Mark and our three children, aged 15, 14 and 10,” she said.

“It’s tucked out of the way for security reasons – our last home was rigged up to the local police station and had panic alarms fitted because of threats I received to my life.

“I was forced to sell it for £950,000 in early 2018 to pay off a legal bill in excess of £500,000,” she revealed.

While she didn’t apologise for the circumstances leading up to the 2017 legal case. Hopkins did express regret that she hadn’t acted sooner to settle the case out of court.
