Jack Grealish or James Maddison could ‘unlock the door’ for Manchester United, says Ryan Giggs

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has talked up a move for either Jack Grealish or James Maddison this January.

Grealish and Maddison have had outstanding campaigns from Aston Villa and Leicester respectively and their impressive form has seen them heavily linked with the Red Devils in recent weeks as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer plans for life without Paul Pogba.

Bruno Fernandes remains United’s top target but the Premier League giants are yet to reach an agreement with Sporting for the 25-year-old, with less than a fortnight remaining of the transfer window.

The latest reports claim that Manchester City are set to rival United for Fernandes as they line up a huge offer for the Portugal international.

Giggs agrees that Solskjaer needs to bolster his options in the middle of the park after a frustrating start to the season and discussed the issue at length ahead of United’s 2-0 defeat at the hands of Liverpool on Sunday.

And the Welshman believes a player of Grealish or Maddison’s quality would be able to ‘unlock the door’ for the attacking talent Solskjaer has at his disposal up front.

‘I don’t think he’s got the players. I think he’s probably a couple of players short in actually changing that way of playing,’ Giggs told beIN SPORTS.

‘That No.10, that focal point and also a midfielder. Whether Pogba’s that, he’s been so inconsistent. Obviously on his day he could be that player.

‘But they’re missing a Grealish or a Maddison, a player like that which can unlock the door.’

Giggs added: ‘I think it suits because of the pace we’ve got. It suits the way they play and also, when you come up against good teams, they like to dominate possession. We haven’t got the players.

‘Ole has got rid of [Alexis] Sanchez, [Romelu] Lukaku and not really replaced them because for whatever reason the player isn’t out there. He hasn’t fancied a player.

‘I think he’s being given time to actually have two or three transfer windows and I think, judging from his first transfer window, he’s done well.

‘Now he needs to go again a couple of times and get them players in where you can maybe tweak the way that you play.’

Last week, Alan Shearer said he would be ‘amazed’ if Maddison completed a switch to Old Trafford this winter.

‘I totally understand why, if it’s true, Manchester United would want James Maddison because he’s a very, very good player,’ the former England striker told Coral.

‘But I would be amazed if Leicester were to let him go in this transfer window.

‘The way things are going at Leicester, the way he’s playing, what is at stake for Leicester… I cannot see them letting one of their top players go this January.

‘If I was him, yes [I’d want to stay at Leicester] at this moment in time.

‘When you look at the situation that Manchester United are in in terms of challenging for top four, how much they have to improve, the time that will take…

‘I understand that they’re a huge football club but, in terms of where James Maddison is at this moment in time, I think he’s better off staying at Leicester certainly until the end of the season and then weigh things up again then.’
