ITV strike La Liga deal with Barcelona vs Athletic Bilbao to be screened live on Friday night

ITV have agreed a continuation of their La Liga broadcast partnership to screen the Spanish top flight on terrestrial TV.

The broadcaster struck a late deal with La Liga in February after streaming service Eleven Sports was forced to renegotiate its exclusive rights deal in December.

ITV screened matches for the remainder of the campaign with European domestic football making its return to UK free-to-air channels.

That partnership is now set to continue with the broadcaster announcing a deal for the 2019/20 campaign – starting with coverage of Barcelona’s season opener against Athletic Bilbao this Friday, August 16.

Real Madrid and Barcelona games will be amongst those shown by ITV this year

Matches will be shown on ITV4 with highlights shows being shown each week on ITV and ITV4.

The first match will see Barcelona kick-off their title defence away from home at San Mames, whilst their home game against Real Betis on Sunday, August 25 has also been confirmed for broadcast.

Real Madrid’s trip to Villarreal on Sunday, September 1 is also on the schedule as the channel look to build on their successful venture into European domestic football at the end of last season.

Barcelona will be bidding to defend their La Liga title when the season gets underway

Real Madrid has splashed the cash this summer in an effort to close the gap on Barcelona following a disastrous campaign, with Eden Hazard joining from Chelsea in their headline move.

But Barcelona have welcomed Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid, who have, in turn, replaced him with Portuguese wonderkid Joao Felix for more than £100m.

With Neymar also tipped to return to Spain before the European transfer deadline on September 2, the competition is set to provide a dramatic campaign which will now be accessible to UK TV viewers.
