ITV and BBC will pause for Clap for Carers at 8pm tonight

ITV and the BBC will pause transmission tonight as the nation comes together to show appreciation for key workers on the frontline of the coronavirus pandemic.

It’s the second week in a row that households across the UK are being urged to pay tribute to the efforts of those who are battling the devastating effects of the virus.

Millions of people applauded from windows, balconies and doorways last Thursday night in aid of the NHS.

And now they are being asked to express their thanks again, this time to a all key workers including the NHS, teachers, cleaners, supermarket workers and delivery drivers.

ITV is set to switch off before The Martin Lewis Money Show at 8pm, with the scheduled programming to be replaced for a short time with a reminder to show gratitude to those who are still working through lockdown.

Graphics especially created by  ITV Creative will encourage viewers to donate to NHS Charities Together – and to keep a safe distance from each other while saying thanks to workers who are battling to keep the country going amid the health crisis.

Annemarie Plas, creator of #ClapforourCarers movement in the UK, said: “I am really delighted that ITV is backing the initiative to clap for all who there are out there taking care of us, and helping keep that Thursday 8pm moment alive.”

The BBC will also pause their usual programming to broadcast live coverage of the second Clap for our Carers event between 8pm until 8:05pm.

The urgent schedule change is not set to have a major effect on the rest of the channel’s line-up as Question Time will start just five minutes later.

ITV have also launched their landmark mental wellness campaign, Britain Get Talking, which continues throughout the month.

They are urging the public to share messages of support and love amongst one another, and check on neighbours at this time of isolation.

Carolyn McCall, Chief Executive at ITV, said: “ITV is joining the rest of the country in thanking everyone in the NHS and carers who are doing such a vital and fantastic role – so we will pause our programming at 8pm to applaud the heroes within the NHS for the remarkable efforts they are making, and raise as much money for NHS charities as we can thanks to our viewers’ generosity.”

NHS Charities Together Chief Executive Ellie Orton added: “Joining the wonderful wave of support for the NHS to say a massive thank you together with Clap for our Carers is already making such a difference and today, and because of the brilliant British people, we have already raised nearly £17 million for our Covid-19 Urgent Appeal.

“Now with ITV’s generosity to give free air time to remind everyone of the opportunity to express their love and thanks and to also give back, we are even more grateful so thank you.

“We are distributing funds to over 140 NHS charities who are the legal way that the NHS receives, holds and spends charitable funds. These funds are above and beyond the funds that the government has provided and together we help provide the very best care for NHS patients.”
