‘It is a little bit unfair’ – Pep Guardiola takes Liverpool swipe over Man City award snub

The 10-man shortlist for the prize includes three Reds players – Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.

The list also features Tottenham star Harry Kane, who made it all the way to the final of Europe’s elite competition with Spurs.

No Manchester City players appear on the list despite Guardiola’s team winning a domestic treble last season.

And the Spanish manager isn’t happy that some of his players have been exiled from consideration for the prize.

“This award is for seven games,” he said.

“When you win the Champions League, you will be there. The other 10 or 11 months don’t matter for these kinds of prizes.

“But I was a little bit surprised because our players were incredible.

“I cannot imagine Barcelona or Real Madrid winning four titles in one season and not having a single player there. That is impossible.”

Guardiola then named Bernardo Silva as a player who performed better than everyone else in England last year – but was not named despite winning the UEFA Nations League with Portugal as well.

“For example, I don’t think one player made a better season than Bernardo Silva last season as he even won the Nations League with Portugal,” he added.

“In the year we got 100 points, huge respect for Mohamed Salah, but Kevin De Bruyne was above and beyond the normal situations but it is opinions.

“It is a little bit unfair but it is what it is.

“Maybe we have to win five titles or Bernardo six or maybe we have to get 250 points to be there next season.”

Liverpool and City go head-to-head at Wembley today for the Community Shield, which Guardiola’s side won last year season against Chelsea.

Last season, City overcame a stern title challenge from Liverpool, who lost out on their first English league gong in 29 years by one point.
