Is this bath mat grey or purple? It’s dividing the internet

It looks pretty grey here (Picture: Facebook)

Last week, we found out that there is a noise that some people can make inside their ear and others can’t.

It’s always strange when some people can do something and the rest of us simply can’t fathom that this thing even exists. How can our realities be so different?

Another reality-bending trick is this one posted to Facebook by an Australian woman on the group Aldi Mums.

Her post, which has divided commenters, centered around a set of bath mats she got from the retailer, which she thought were grey. Her husband, however, disagreed.

She said, ‘Please help… I swear I purchased a light grey bath mat set from Aldi today $9.99 (£5), got them home put them in the main bathroom, still looking a lovely light grey.

‘Tonight my husband comes in and says why do I have purple bath mats in my bathroom… checked it out and the dam things are now purple!!!

But surely this can’t be grey (Picture: Facebook)

‘I swear I purchase light grey bath mat set… so can anyone clarify if I’m completely crazy or these mats change colour in natural vs artificial light?!?

‘P.S not happy with our definitely purple bath mats.’

Some of those commenting on the post were adamant that she had actually bought the correct colour, with one saying, ‘I see grey, no purple in sight.’

Others were convinced that they could see purple, though, even in the store.

One person said: ‘Bought the same ones and I swear they were grey and now look purple at home. Must be the lighting in store.’

‘I saw them in-store and thought they looked purple so I didn’t buy them as I wanted grey, I was disappointed.’

Apparently there’s a relatively simple reason why some of us see it as one, and others another colour. It’s all to do with lighting.

Red tones can become more prominent in artificial light, which gives greys a more pinky hue depending on which light we’re seeing something in.

Still, it doesn’t work as a consolation for buying bath mats you’ll never be able to look at the same again.
