Is Keanu Reeves Really in Hobbs & Shaw? The Rock Weighs In

Is Keanu Reeves joining the Fast and Furious universe? That’s been one of the hot rumors floating around, as the beloved action star is supposedly going to appear in Hobbs & Shaw. Now, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has weighed in on that possibly tantalizing prospect. Unfortunately, he’s here to pour some cold water on the situation, as opposed to stoking the fire.

Dwayne Johnson is about to be given the Generation Award at the MTV Movie and TV Awards. During a recent interview in honor of his achievement, the wrestler-turned-actor was asked about those Keanu Reeves rumors. While Johnson admits he and Reeves did have some conversations about doing something together at one point, which is, in itself, interesting, he has shut down the possibility of the actor showing up in Hobbs & Shaw. Here’s what he had to say about it.

“I love Keanu. You know Keanu, obviously he’s having this just awesome time in his career. We talked about it, we talked, ‘Hey dude, just somewhere down the line, let’s do something for sure.’ But as of now, in Hobbs & Shaw, not Keanu.”

Previously, a report stated that Keanu Reeves was going to appear in the first ever Fast and Furious spin-off as a villain. The report indicated that Reeves’ character would be connected to Idris Elba’s Brixton, who is set to be the main villain of the upcoming movie. He wouldn’t have been introduced until later on in the movie, and possibly only in a post-credit scene. That would have, in all likelihood, set him up as a bigger villain for the future. While that’s clearly not going to happen, based on The Rock’s comments here, it’s possible this door could be left open for the future.

Keanu Reeves, for his part, is having an incredible year, even without joining the Fast and Furious family. John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum set a new high-mark for the franchise at the box office, which has paved the way for the already-announced John Wick 4. He also had one of the most memorable cameos ever as a celebrity playing themselves in Netflix’s Always Be My Maybe. To top it all off, he’s set to voice a new character named Duke Caboom in Toy Story 4. Having a part in Hobbs & Shaw would have been almost too much Keanu to handle in one year. Though, the internet may argue with me on that one.

What we know for sure is that Jason Statham, Vanessa Kirby, Eiza Gonzalez and WWE star Roman Reigns will appear alongside Dwayne Johnson in the movie. David Leitch (Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2) is in the director’s chair. To date, the Fast and Furious movies have grossed $5.1 billion at the box office. Is this spin-off is successful, it’s easy to imagine a scenario in which Keanu Reeves can join the series down the line. It’s just not going to happen this summer. Hobbs & Shaw is set to arrive in theaters on August 2. Be sure to check out the interview clip from the MTV Twitter account below.
