Is It Possible to Find Football Betting Tips On Twitter?

Twitter is known for a lot of things, rather, I should say a lot of trends.

And it is unlikely to find football betting tips on Twitter right?

Wrong, as uncommon as it sounds, this trend actually exists and has been trending for quite some time now.

Of course, Twitter has a policy that prohibits the promotion of gambling content, except for campaigns targeting specified countries.

Regardless, there are advertisers that are permitted to do this, if they have prior authorization from Twitter.

This Authorization is gotten by being in touch with a Twitter account team.

Therefore, tipster services on Twitter have become a ‘thing’ and surprisingly has a thriving community of its own.

Is It Possible to Find Football Betting Tips on Twitter?

Yes, it is. Twitter is a great place to start when looking for free betting tips. A simple search for ‘betting tips’ will provide you with hundreds of potential accounts, all of which provide their opinions on where you should be placing your bets.

There are plenty of professional betters and traders who are willing to provide their help to those who need it via Twitter and these tipster services are quite popular but not entirely without fault.

However, researchers have found out that Twitter posts actually provide a better prediction of winners and losers immediately after kick-off than bookies’ odds but the main ordeal with these services remains to find one that is accurate and makes a long-term profit, this is harder than you’d think.

How Accurate Have these Predictions Been?

As stated earlier, researchers have found out that Twitter posts actually provide a better prediction of winners and losers immediately after kick-off than bookies’ odds. This proves that closely studying the social media site before placing a bet could be a money-spinning strategy.

The study analyzed 13.8m tweets in total, that is, 5.2 tweets per second – during the 2013/14 Premier League season.

The punters who had used Twitter to guide their betting earned an average return of 2.28% from over 900k bets. In contrast, combining the results from more than four million bets across the 372 analyzed matches yielded an average loss of 5.41%.

The lead researcher, Dr. Alasdair Brown of the University of East Anglia’s School of Economics, said: “Much of the predictive power of social media presents itself just after significant market events, such as goals and red cards, where the tone of tweets can help in the interpretation of information.”

Co-author Dr. James Reade, a sports economist at the University of Reading, added: “This is a real ‘wisdom of crowds’ kind of outcome. Betting prices, allied with the general mood on Twitter, can give a really accurate picture of where a match is going, in real-time.”

The findings of these authors, which have been published in the Economic Inquiry journal, go a long way to support recent evidence that content posted on social media can be useful in forecasting.
