iPhone 9, is that you? New low-cost iPhone model could arrive as early as March

Fans of Apple’s beloved iPhone SE get ready: there could be a new low-cost iPhone to succeed the 2016 device arriving as early as March.

According to a report by Bloomberg, the new iPhone will have a 4.7-inch screen and look similar to 2017’s iPhone 8, the last model to offer a compact screen and thick bezels. It will bring back the home button, along with Apple’s TouchID fingerprint scanner, but no facial recognition.

Though this will be a more affordable iPhone compared to the 2019 releases – the iPhone 11 started at £729 and prices for the iPhone 11 Pro Max running up to £1,499 – the phone will feature the same processor as the flagship range.

This means the smartphone will have a decent battery life as well as improved AI features such as enhanced text-to-speech capabilities for things like Siri.

How the new iPhone 9 could look according to OnLeaks and iGeeksblog (OnLeaks x iGeeksblog)

As per the Bloomberg report, Apple is looking to gain a larger foothold in the smartphone market ahead of the release of its 5G devices later in 2020, which will most certainly be more expensive thanks to the inclusion of next-gen mobile connectivity as well as new cameras and faster processors.

The publication says Apple hopes to ship more than 200 million phones this year so it needs to have some more affordable offerings to compete with the Android phone makers with their multiple devices at different price points.

The announcement of the new iPhone SE could be coming soon too. Apple’s suppliers are expected to start assembling the phone in February, with the device officially revealed in March.

Rumours of an iPhone SE2 or low-cost iPhone 9 have been circling for years but the information regarding Apple’s suppliers point to this being more of a possibility than before. It will surely be a hit with Apple fans who don’t work to fork out £700+ for a new device, as well as people who enjoy having a phone they can actually fit in their pocket.

It will be interesting to see the camera capabilities on the device. When Google launched the cheaper Pixel 3a last year, swapping a glass design for plastic and adding a headphone jack, it was an immediate hit partly thanks to the inclusion of Google’s incredible camera on a much more affordable device. If Apple goes the same way, then this could be a winner.
