Interview: Invasion's Azhy Robertson Talks Video Games, Alien Apocalypses, & Playing Luke Malik – Game Rant

It’s easy to imagine oneself battling a virus outbreak or a deadly natural disaster as both have roots grounded in familiarity. What about an alien invasion? It isn’t too far-fetched of an idea. Many can easily accept that there is life that exists beyond Earth. With that being said, creators of alien-related projects have an endless amount of creative liberty when it comes to storytelling due to the diverse way aliens are represented in entertainment. There’s Kang and Kodos, the campy aliens from The Simpsons, or the mysterious Demogorgons, the monsters who exist to haunt the singular town of Hawkins, Indiana, or even the titular alien from Lilo & Stich, a sweet dog-like friend on the search for compassion and family. Apple TV’s original series Invasion takes a different twist on extraterrestrials, bringing forth deadly, mechanical creatures and showing their impact on the global sphere.

GAMERANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Starring in Invasion as Luke Malik is the young actor Azhy Robertson. He previously was seen on-screen in Netflix’s Marriage Story and Jacob Chase’s horror flick Come Play. While the video-game-obsessed-preteen isn’t completely new to the science-fiction genre, he was still challenged on the set of the series. Speaking to Game Rant, he shared, “I really like Luke as a character because he starts off as a normal kid, but then the alien invasion really messes with his life and his family. He starts caring more about his family, especially his sister, Sarah. I feel like he’s really mature for his age and he knows something that he isn’t letting on.”

Continuing on, he highlighted one of the most challenging moments he had to endure while getting into character. Robertson said, “There’s a point in episode two where I had to scream really loud because he’s [Luke] hearing some weird, alien stuff in his ears. That was pretty crazy because I had to scream super loud. I had to cry and really feel like I was in a lot of pain.” Game Rant had the chance to chat with Robertson about his favorite video games, getting into character, and how long he would last in an alien invasion.

Game Rant: Have you binge-watched anything recently?

Azhy Robertson: I just finished Squid Game. It was pretty good. I liked it. I also just started watching the League of Legends show Arcane on Netflix.

GR: I see your guitar in the background. Do you play guitar? With that, acting, and school, what does your schedule look like on a daily basis?

AR: Yeah, it’s, it’s a bass. I picked it up again after a few years. It was a really good decision. It’s really fun. I get up around 5:30 [A.M.] because my school is kind of far away. I go to school until three, then I get out. When I’m home, I usually do my homework and then practice this [his guitar]. And then I start playing video games.

GR: What video games are you playing?

AR: I’ve been playing a lot of Minecraft with my friends. I just got the new Call of Duty. I’m excited for the new Battlefield 2 that’s coming out. [Author note: He’s way too cool!]

GR: Getting straight into the Invasion stuff — What was your first reaction when you got the script? Are you an alien fan? Did this check some boxes off of your dream list?

AR: I really like sci-fi stuff and aliens in general. So, that’s pretty cool. I was interested in that part of the show. But also the characters since they’re from all around the world. They’re it’s really cool to see all their reactions to the whole, like, world ending alien invasion.

GR: How would you react if you found out, right now, that the world was being invaded by aliens? You have like, a few weeks? What would you do?

AR: I’d be really scared. Um, I’d probably lock my doors. Barricade them? Do as much as I could to stay safe.

GR: I have a running joke in my family that if there’s a zombie apocalypse, I’m out. I’m the first one to go. How long do you think you would last in an alien invasion? That’s a dark question. I’m sorry.

AR: No, it’s fine. I’ve thought about it a few times too. I would probably not last very long. I’m kind of a germaphobe. When I’m dirty, I rush to wash my hands. A lot of stuff is probably going to be gross and disheveled in a zombie apocalypse or an alien invasion, so I probably wouldn’t last very long.

GR: I feel like we’ve watched you grow up on-screen. I remember Marriage Story and Come Play. What were the integral lessons that you learned during those early roles that helped you take on this Apple TV series?

AR: There are three main things that I always think about: Do your best as your character. Don’t try too hard, because then that will make your performance look really forced, which is not very good. And, I always try to think of myself as my character.

GR: How have your friends and family reacted to Invasion and your role?

AR: My family is really proud of me. My mom and dad are really cool and supportive when I’m acting. I try not to talk about it a lot with my friends, but usually, they’re like, “Oh, I saw your new show. It’s really cool.” And I and I’m like, “Oh, really cool. Thanks.”

Invasion is currently streaming on Apple TV.
