Interior designer shares biggest mistakes people make when decorating houses

If you recently moved into a new home, you might be thinking about how you’re going to do the place up and leave your mark on it.

But before you go racing off to the nearest furniture store, there are a few things you might want to consider.

Australian interior designer Darren Palmer has shared some of the biggest mistakes people make when decorating their home.

And thankfully he’s also provided some solutions for them and how to make your place look its absolute best.

An interior designer has shared the biggest mistakes people make in the home

He advises against picking a coffee table too small for the space

Speaking to domain.com.au, Palmer admitted that one of the most common errors people make is with coffee tables.

He said: “So often I’ll see a small or medium-sized coffee table floating a distance away from the couches.

“It looks stingy.”

Instead of buying a small table, he recommends measuring the space and marking out a space for the new table, leaving around 400 to 500 millimetres between the edge of the sofa and the coffee table.

Palmer advises not to push furniture right back against the wall

As well as buying tables that are too small, Palmer also says too many people push their furniture right back against the walls, to create a larger looking room.

But he thinks this actually gives the opposite effect.

So where should you place your furniture?

The expert claims you should “create zones in large rooms by bringing furniture together, anchored by a rug, art or light.”

He adds: “Having an unfilled area around the furniture looks like you have the luxury of space.”

Other decor issues he has encountered include buying rugs that are too small.

Similar to the coffee table issue, he recommends buying a bigger rug and says ideally that it should at least fit under the front legs of all your lounge seating.
